Help and answers.
Short answers to the questions people ask most. Search, or browse by topic.
Getting started
How do I start?
Open the web app, enter your name and home currency, then create a group and add people by name. Add your first expense with the Add expense button or by pressing N.
Do I need an account?
No. Baant works without an account. Your groups are kept in the browser or phone where you create them.
Can I try it with sample data?
Yes. Open the sample trip: five friends, five currencies and a settle-up plan, all worked out by the same engine as your own groups. Delete it whenever you like.
How do I install Baant on my phone?
Open the site in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone and choose Add to Home Screen. The Get the app page has step-by-step instructions.
Can I use the same groups on two devices?
Yes, by moving them: download a backup on one device and restore it on the other (both are under Import and export), or share a group as a link and open it on the other device. Automatic sync will come with accounts.
Groups and people
How do I add people?
In a group, open People and choose Add a person. A name is enough; a country helps Baant plan payments across borders, and a UPI ID lets others pay them.
What do owner, admin, member and guest mean?
The owner created the group. Owners and admins manage people and settings, approve business expenses and set trip rates. Guests are friends without the app; an owner or admin can record things for them.
How do I share a group with friends?
Open the group, choose Share, and send the link or file. Your friend opens it, says which person they are, and can add expenses. When they send their copy back, Baant adds their changes to yours.
What happens when someone leaves?
Their history stays and their balance stays visible until it is settled. They can rejoin later. People who appear in expenses cannot be removed, only marked as left.
How do I archive or delete a group?
Group settings has Archive, which keeps the group but moves it out of the way, and Remove from this device, which deletes your copy after you confirm.
Expenses and splits
How do I split unequally?
In the expense form choose Exact amounts, Percent, Shares or Adjust. Baant shows what is left to assign until the shares add up to the total.
How do I split a restaurant bill item by item?
Choose Item by item, add each dish and tick who had it. Add tax, service charge, tip or discount below; choose whether each is shared in proportion, equally or by certain people. You can also scan the bill to fill in the lines.
Two of us paid. How do I enter that?
Under Paid by choose Several people and enter what each one paid. The amounts must add up to the total.
How do I record a refund?
Open the original expense and choose Record refund. The refund is linked to the original, which stays unchanged, and it starts shared back in the same proportions; change the split if the refund was different.
Can I type or say an expense in one sentence?
Yes. In the expense form, type something like “2400 dinner paid by me, split with Rahul and Amit” and choose Fill in, or press the microphone and say it. Amounts in words such as “two thousand four hundred” or “2 lakh” are understood. Check the form, then save.
How does scanning a bill work?
Choose Scan a bill in the expense form and pick a photo. On this website the photo is read in your browser and is not uploaded. The lines, taxes and total fill the form for you to check, and the photo is attached as the receipt.
How do I fix a mistake?
Open the expense and choose Edit. Baant keeps the earlier version in the history. If people have already started paying, it asks for a short reason.
How do I delete an expense?
Choose Void and give a reason. The expense is set aside and no longer counts, but stays in the history and can be restored.
What is a dispute?
Anyone can flag an expense as wrong (wrong amount, wrong people, duplicate, wrong currency, wrong split or already paid). The expense still counts until it is edited or voided, and the dispute stays on record until resolved.
How do repeating expenses work?
Choose Repeat in the expense form, or set one up under the group’s Repeating tab: how often, from when, and until when. Baant shows what is due and adds it with one click, or by itself if you choose that.
Currencies and rates
Which currencies can I use?
All 155 currencies in everyday use. Each expense can be in a different currency from the group.
Which exchange rate does Baant use?
A trip rate if the group set one, otherwise the amount your card was charged if you enter it, otherwise a rate you type, otherwise the European Central Bank reference rate for the date (about 30 major currencies, needs internet).
What does “Rate needed” mean?
No rate was available when you saved, for example offline in a currency Baant has never seen. The expense is kept but not counted until you add the rate.
What is a provisional rate?
Offline, Baant uses the last rate it saw for that currency and marks it provisional. Later you can keep it or replace it with the rate for the day.
Can I change the group’s currency?
Only before the first expense or payment. After that, balances depend on it, so it stays fixed.
Settling up and UPI
What is “fewest international payments”?
For groups with people in several countries, Baant settles within each country first and then sends one payment per country that owes, so fewer payments cross a border.
How does Pay via UPI work on a computer?
Baant shows a UPI QR code with the amount and note filled in. Scan it with any UPI app on your phone, pay there, then come back and say whether it went through.
Why does my payment say “Pending confirmation”?
You said you paid, and it already counts in the balances. The person you paid confirms it when the money arrives, which makes it Completed.
Someone paid me. How do I record it?
Open Settle up and choose Record received next to their name. Money you received counts straight away. If they have not paid yet, you can show your own UPI code there for them to scan.
Can I pay part of what I owe?
Yes. Record the amount you paid; your balance shows what is still open.
Can I pay someone in another currency?
Yes. Choose their currency in Record payment and enter the rate you agreed. Baant records both amounts and the rate.
What does Write off mean?
The person owed can clear a small balance (below the group’s limit, ₹10 by default) instead of asking for it.
Data, backups and privacy
Where is my data stored?
In the browser or phone where you use Baant. There is no server copy yet. Clearing the browser’s site data deletes it, so keep a backup.
How do I back up?
Open Import and export and choose Download a backup, or Download everything as a ZIP to get the PDF statements, Excel workbooks and receipts as well. Keep the file somewhere safe; Restore a backup brings it back on any device.
How do I move from Splitwise?
In Splitwise, open the group, choose Export as spreadsheet and save the CSV file. In Baant, open Import and export, find Import from Splitwise and choose the file. Check the preview, say which person is you, then create the group.
Does Baant work offline?
Yes. Once opened, the web app keeps working without internet, and installed versions open without it too. Only reference exchange rates need a connection.
How do I delete everything?
Account has Erase everything. It cannot be undone, so download a backup first if you might want it later.
When something goes wrong
My groups have disappeared
Check you are using the same browser and profile as before; each keeps its own data. If the browser’s data was cleared, restore your last backup under Import and export.
The exchange rate did not load
You may be offline, or the currency may not be one of those the reference service covers. Type the rate, use the card statement amount, or save it as Rate needed.
The UPI app did not open
On a computer, use the QR code instead. On an iPhone, pick your UPI app from the list. Check that the person’s UPI ID is right.
The receipt scan missed some lines
Scans work best on a flat, well-lit photo of a printed bill. Every line can be edited, added or removed before you save.
